Performing Arts

Year 8
Subject Information

Students may choose to complete either one semester of Visual Arts (Visual Arts and Design) or a semester of Performing Arts (Drama and Media).

Subject Description

In this semester course, students will expand on the fundamental skills and knowledge covered in General Arts course. Students will explore scripted play texts on various themes in order to develop capabilities in speech, character work, teamwork and presentation.

Students will then implement these skills within the production process of film creation. Students will work collaboratively to create a polished short film which they are expected to perform in, film and edit, individually creating their own piece to submit. Where possible students will either attend a live performance or have a guest speaker to support them throughout the creation of their work.

In Performing Arts: Semester, students:

  • take part in short performances

  • learn to view and discuss each other's work thoughtfully and constructively

  • attend live theatre performances and respond to a guest presenter through discussions and writing

  • learn to work cooperatively and productively with others in pairs and small groups

  • learn to plan, organise, communicate, negotiate, make decisions and solve problems as part of a team

  • learn to contribute positively in class so that they can take creative risks, grow in confidence and develop new skills

  • students will be required to maintain an Arts Process Journal demonstrating evaluation and reflection, undertake written assignments and oral presentations

The films created will be entered into the Norwood Morialta High School Film Festival with an opportunity for students to win prizes for their works created in class
