Subject Description

Students completing a full year will complete two 10 credit semesters of Stage 1 Music Advanced. Through the study of music, students have the opportunity to engage in musical activities such as performing, composing, arranging, researching and developing and applying music technologies.

Students benefit from the opportunity to develop their practical and creative potential, oral and written skills, and their capacity to make informed interpretative and aesthetic judgments. Study and participation in music draws together students’ cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills, strengthening their ability to manage work and learning, and to communicate effectively and sensitively. This program is designed for students with a substantial background in music. Students wishing to study Stage 2 Music must complete a full year of Year 11 Music.
 
Content

  • Public performance (both solo performance and ensemble performance)

  • Theory and aural

  • An understanding of the music program Sibelius.

  • Analysis & responding to Live Musical Performances.

Students are required to undertake regular instrumental or vocal lessons either with a private tutor outside of the school or through one of the tutors available at NMHS.


Free small group lessons offered include: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass; Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone; Trumpet, Trombone; Guitar and Bass Guitar.


Private one-to-one lessons ($30-35 per week) include: Guitar, Voice, Classical Piano, Jazz Piano, Drums. Hire instruments are available at the rate of $45 per term.


Co-curricular music at NMHS: 

The Music faculty also offers the following co-curricular ensembles: string and wind orchestra, big band and drum corps. Students studying a co-curricular ensemble will receive a double lesson home study in lieu of after school rehearsals.

Additional Costs

Families may be asked to contribute towards the cost of tickets for a live performances as arranged with the teacher to an approximate total of $20.00.
Participation in the Senior Big Band or Senior Orchestra is levied at the rate of $100 per annum.

Creative Works: At least 4 assessments are required for a 10 credit subject, 7 for a 20 credit subject.

Musical Literacy: At least 4 assessments are required for a 10 credit subject, 7 for a 20 credit subject.
