Visual Arts: Design

Assumed Knowledge

Students will be expected to have sound literacy skills​.


Students must have studied art or design at Year 11 and achieved a ‘C’ grade or better. Students who do not meet these requirements must attend an interview with The Arts Coordinator and subject teacher for approval.​

Subject Description

Design in The Arts involves students using their creativity to develop visual solutions to design briefs and problems.
Stage 2 Design enables students to work within areas of Design of their interest. Using skills developed in previous years of design and art, students are able to produce their own Design briefs and practical works to a professional standard. Works produced must be highly creative and original, with students undertaking the design process, which is then documented in their folio. 

​They will analyse other works of art and design to develop their own knowledge, skills and understanding. The broad areas of design that students can choose to study include graphic design, branding, packaging design, illustration, advertising, architecture, product design, fashion design and furniture design.​

Additional Costs

Three A3 folios. Course may involve attending an exhibition or event (approximately $15.00). Students may choose to print large format files at external print companies at their own expense.

Assessment Type 1:

Folio: Students produce one folio of 40 A3 pages that documents the design process for their practical work.

Assessment Type 2:

Practical: Two Practicals or a Body of Works (Suite) in response to Design Brief. Practitioner’s statement of 500 words or 1000 words for Body of Works to support practical work.

Assessment Type 3:

Visual Study: Students produce one visual study of 20 A3 pages and 2000 words. It is a practical and theory task allowing students to study a topic of their choice. This can also be a digital recording of 12 minutes.
