A ‘C’grade or better in Stage 1 EAL or Essential English​.

Subject Description

EAL learners where the focus is on responding to and creating texts for a range of personal, social, cultural, community, and/or workplace contexts. Students will have the opportunity to understand and interpret information, ideas, and perspectives in texts and consider ways in which language choices are used to create meaning. This subject is taught by EAL teachers and therefore the program is designed to promote EAL students and their learning.

​The text and contexts chosen are different from Stage 2 Essential English for this reason.

Assessment Type 1:

Responding to Texts: 3 tasks of which must be written, multi-modal and oral responses (800 words and 5 minute oral).

Assessment Type 2:

Creating Texts: 3 tasks. 1 advocacy text and 2 other texts in written, oral or multimodal format (800 words, oral 5 minutes)​.

Assessment Type 3:

External Assessment: Independent language study focusing on spoken, non-verbal, visual, and or written language in a chosen context (1500 words or 9 minute oral)​.
